Pop Bang

Modern cars are quiet. Electric ones are silent. Pop Bang gives one back its voice, using nothing but a phone in a cradle and the speed you are actually doing.

How it works

Open it in the browser, allow location, tap once to wake the speakers, and drive. It reads GPS once a second to know how fast you are going, and builds the engine note from that: it rises as you accelerate, settles at a cruise, and pops and crackles on the overrun when you lift off.

There is no app to install and nothing to update. It is a web page, which is the whole point — a passenger can open it on their own phone in ten seconds.

The two taps

A browser will not make a noise until somebody taps something; that is a rule of the web, not a bug. So the first run asks for exactly two things: permission to read your speed, and one tap to open the audio. After that the drive starts clean instead of crackling into life halfway down the road.

What it does with your position

Reads it, uses it, forgets it. Your speed drives the engine and that is the only thing the location is for. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves the car. There is no telemetry.

An account is optional and unlocks paid sound packs. It is not needed to drive.
